Why Support MEGS?

The MEGS website and related activities are for people who are convinced that we must eliminate the use of fossil fuels as quickly as we can. The work of thousands of scientists and political leaders is now focused on this activity. James Hansen and Al Gore are two of the more well known people who are working toward this end. There are thousands, if not millions, of people from all walks of life who have the same concerns, but have little time to wade through all the possibilities, programs and political machinations around how we generate needed energy from clean sources at reasonable cost.

What follows is a list of statements that help understand what the people who bring you MEGS think about the role individual citizens can play in gaining clean, safe and reasonably inexpensive energy. We hope that if you agree that following statements are correct, you will join MEGSorg, Inc. and sign the MEGS Support Pledge, if you are financially able.

Global Warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels. The elimination of fossil fuel burning demands that there be alternate sources for the energy we need.

There is considerable support for using conservation measures to reduce our need for burning fossil fuels. There is also a large and growing consensus that wind and solar technologies will provide a great deal of the needed replacement energy. But the task of replacing 10,707 fossil fuel plants and the oil that our internal combustion engines use for transportation will require much more energy than the amount that conversation, wind and solar can produce.

When all the benefits of conservation and the maximum production of wind and solar implementations are considered, perhaps as much as 40% more energy will be needed. This leaves two choices for the additional energy needed: Nuclear power or geothermal energy production (unless there is some magic breakthrough from new science).

At the present time organizations with major funding are trying to make sure that additional energy comes from nuclear energy plants. MEGS supporters are completely opposed to nuclear energy for the old reasons and for new reasons.

Fortunately, there is a solution for clean and cheap energy, and it is geothermal energy.

Unfortunately there is at this time no large and powerful lobby to make geothermal energy possible. The Oil, Coal, Gas and Nuclear Power Industries will delay the introduction of any other method of energy production as long as they can to keep the revenue and subsidies they have. MEGS and MEGSorg, Inc. are the responses from a small group of people to try to change this situation by creating a large group of people committed to making MEGS happen and by raising funds to support the research needed to make it cost effective.
